Book of the Month: Evicted

As I have been researching things about racial inequality, I found a lot of links between poverty and racial inequality. Throughout my research, I kept coming across a book being referenced called Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, by Matthew Desmond. Since it had been referenced several times, I thought I would check it out and boy, I’m glad I did. I appreciated that this book takes a look at modern-day poverty and how housing is affected by it. My mind was actually blown that the things discussed about living conditions happen in the United States. 😫

I decided to share this book as the Book of the Month because I think it has a good insight into why a lot of people in poverty have a hard time getting out of poverty. Not only does it discuss that, but it also gives a great (yet terrible) perspective from a landlord as well. This book is insightful and points to issues that need to be fixed in our society!!

If you choose to read this book, I would encourage you to ask yourself the following questions as you read:

  1. What is something new that I learned from this book?

  2. Did a concept or idea challenge you in any way?

  3. Are there any points, ideas, or concepts of inspiration?

  4. Is there any idea or concept that I can implement in my life?

Along with the questions above, I would encourage you to take a look at the author’s reading guide. The guide is helpful because it encourages you to think and process the book a little deeper. Again (just like last month), you may want to grab some tissues and be ready to sit in your feelings. If you decide to read and discuss the book with your friend(s), be sure to use the hashtag #teachlistenlove so I can be a part of your journey!
